Political situation in the Kholm and Podliashshia (Padlaska) Regions in the first half of the XXth century is reflected in the book. Two countries, Ukraine and Poland, claimed the lands theirs. The author describes horrible years of Ukrainian-Polish struggle when thousands of Ukrainian soldiers died. Finally, the territories were joined to Poland and the Ukrainians who inhabited these lands were deported to Soviet Ukraine. The recent revival of Ukrainian cultural life in the Kholm and Podliashshia Regions is rather limited.
