The scholarly monograph is based on a comparison of the authors' approaches to portraying Orthodox Russia, clarifying their specificity in the autobiographical works of Ivan Shmelyov (1873 –1950), a Russian emigre writer best known for his full-blooded idyllic recreations of the pre-revolutionary past spent in the merchant district of Moscow and Boris Zaytsev (1881 –1972), a Russian prose writer and dramatist, and a member of the Moscow literary group Sreda.
