Vladimir Mayakovsky once proposed "equating the pen to a bayonet." It seems this iconoclast of Russian literature and voice of the people's revolution called not only on writers and poets but also on journalists to fight with their pen, as a warrior fights with a weapon. He deeply believed in the power of words. After all, words can heal and restore life, or, like a bullet, they can wound or simply kill. Words can warm, freeze, and burn. Words can elevate a person to the heights of glory, or even crush them like a bug. That's why the written word is no less dangerous than a soldier's bayonet in battle. During the turbulent years of war, frontline journalists proved all this with their words in newspapers, magazines, songs, and in battle. You know, we, veteran journalists, the heirs of the victors, were incredibly fortunate to have lived for so long alongside the participants of that bloody war: we met often and managed to preserve, in notebooks, on voice recorders, and on reporter tapes, all the tragic events they endured in the trenches, partisan detachments, and Belarusian swamps during the frequent punitive expeditions of the Nazi occupiers. We wrote our sketches, essays, and stories about the front-line soldiers themselves, stories about the deadly and incredibly difficult military roads, based on the testimony of those who participated in the fierce battles for every height, village, and city—without inventing anything, without adding anything of our own, without fantasizing. And, I hope, we left behind for the history of our long-suffering Fatherland the most authentic events of that devastating and destructive war period.
Eighty years have passed since then. Almost no participants or witnesses of that horrific wartime remain. Yes, and the ranks of post-war chroniclers of that Great Victory are noticeably thinning.
