The book is about the so-called "former people" identified by the ex-Bulgarian Communist Party as the real class enemy of the communist regime. Their fate has remained unjustly unknown for almost three decades since the democratic changes of 1989. The term "former people" was borrowed from the Soviet Union, where the Bolsheviks used it to brand groups of people who lost their social status after the 1917 revolution. In Bulgaria, the category comprised all sorts of people who were despised by the communist regime, although they had been the locomotive of the nation's development and belonged to its political, intellectual and economic elite before the communist takeover of 1944. This study reveals the magnitude and the forms of the longstanding repressions which wiped out entire segments of Bulgarian society that refused to yield to the Soviet-style socioeconomic experiment of the Communist Party between 1944 and 1989.
