The study is devoted to the analysis of the formation of the idea of the Urals as a "supporting edge of the state" in the culture of the USSR in the 1930s-1940s. The authors show that the rhetorical clichés that are taken for granted today were the product of the intense intellectual work of dozens of publicists and writers. Involving extensive material - journalism and periodicals, fiction, poetry, the authors demonstrate the key stages and components of this process, including the rethinking of the Ural history as the history of the land of craftsmen, the development of a new look at the defense political economy of the Urals, the creation of mythologems that endow production tools and industrial products with subjectivity.
