The book was conceived as a chronicle of discussions held in the first quarter-century of the communist era in Bulgaria, showcasing the resistance of the New Music Movement against the dictates of the government's official communist ideology. The author draws on documents from the archives of the Union of Bulgarian Composers and other musical institutions. She looks at the emergence of the ideological norm of "socialist realism" in music and the voices which spoke out against it, analyzes the mechanisms of totalitarian censorship in music, and examines how New Music received moderate legitimacy allowing it to reach European stages in the 1960s.
