The mask is a unique phenomenon of world culture, the phenomenon of which in different historical epochs and in modern times was caused by general cultural trends, including the mediatization of society, when the image of a person becomes an integral part of the communication process. The objects of research are the cult of the mask and its social metamorphoses. The genesis and evolution of the mask are analyzed, its role, originality and functions in primitive society and in Antiquity, in the Middle Ages and in the Age of Enlightenment, at the turn of the XIX – XX centuries are substantiated and in the new millennium. It is shown that the main ability of a mask is to be a "medium", that is, an intermediary between the real and mythological worlds, between man and society.
