Written by the noted American representative of the ethnic-psychological trend in anthropology R.Benedict in 1946 the book explores Japanese culture on the basis of cultural relativist approach. Japanese culture is viewed as a hierarchic phenomenon, which presupposes the precise understanding of his or her role for every member of Japanese society. The author presents Japanese culture of shame opposing it to Western culture, particularly to American culture of blame with its ethic aspect related to divine commandments.
