The second book covers the period from the 1850s to the 1870s, which is called the Epoch of Great Reforms. It was the time of tough administrative chain of command, total suppression of criticism and public activities. The illusion of stability led to omnipotence of bureaucracy, monstrous corruption and complete breakup of the state administration system. Reformative aspirations of Tsar Alexander II ran against the stark resistance of the most significant and powerful part of the nobility. The Russian society split up and the tragedy of that split affected creative work and lives of the main figures of this book: Dostoyevsky, Nekrasov, Turgenev, Goncharov, Chernyshevsky, Dobrolubov, Saltykov-Shchedrin and many others.
