The book presents the difficult period in the Russian history – the end of the 1870s-the beginning of the 1880s – terrorism and tragical loss of the emperor Alexander II Nikolaevich. The book is based on the memoirs of contemporaries and participants of those events, first of all of Alexander Mikhailov who was a great granduncle of the author and the founder of the first Russian terrorist organization "Narodnaya Volya".
