The publication results from the same-name exhibition held on the basis of two collections of manuscript books - of the Russian National Library and the State Hermitage. The catalogue embraces both photo and textual materials in book art of the period from the VIth to the XVIth century: luxurious book-covers, wonderful miniatures and splendid specimens of calligraphy. Articles by such well-known art critics, as O.Zimin and L.Kiselev, enable a better understanding of the multiformity of the manuscripts.
