Klaipeda region is today an inseparable part of Lithuania. But it wasn't always like that. At the beginning of the XXth century, only people with a very volatile imagination could imagine that this city, then called Mamel, would ever be part of a country other than Germany. For the politicians of the Republic of Lithuania to implement their claims to Klaipeda in 1923 the international situation and the readiness of specific people to sacrifice everything in the name of noble goals helped. One of those people is Jonas Budrys (1889–1964). Until the end of his life, Mr. Budrys considered the annexation of Klaipeda as the greatest merit of his life. This publication collects all the memoirs of J. Budris known today and presents their critical analysis. The book reveals a wealth of details (some of them are being published for the first time) not only about how Klaipeda became part of Lithuania, but also about how and why it was told about for a long time.
