The book is dedicated to my mother, through whom I fell in love with freedom before I even knew what it was, and to all those with whom we shared the times of communism and post-communism, the hopes and disappointments, the tears and laughter in a life that, just like in a movie, is ultimately truly wonderful. Svoboda Stefanova was born in Ruse on June 11, 1944, during the heaviest bombing of her hometown during World War II. She spent her childhood and youth in Ruse in difficult days, like for all families of "former people", but also cheerful, among true friends and remarkable teachers. Of the specialties available to "unreliable" people like her, she chose engineering. She has two higher engineering degrees and several specializations in the fields of electrical engineering, radio and television engineering, lighting engineering, and computer science. Svoboda Stefanova is among the founders of UDF-Ruse. She was a member of parliament from UDF in the 36th and 37th National Assembly, and during one of her terms she was the chairwoman of the Environment Committee. She participated in the protests against the long-term gassing of Ruse by the Verahim chemical plant and in the international control commissions in the late 1980s and early 1990s, thanks to which the plant's activities were terminated. In the late 1990s she withdrew from active participation in politics, but until the end of her life she did not stop her civic engagement on important issues for society. She died on March 8, 2023 in Sofia.
