Leonid Utesov (1895-1982) was a person with a unique and quite paradoxical fate. A jazzman in the country which officially denounced jazz, he founded and preserved the soviet jazz. Self-educated poet and writer, he wrote several successful books. One of the most popular singers of his times reckons on pre-revolutionary Odessa, the NEP, the Great Patriotic War, his friends and colleagues and various theaters where he worked - from the theater of Vsevolod Meyerkhold to small theaters of miniature in Odessa.
