The Jewish people have made a significant contribution to Belarusian culture. This is not surprising: at the beginning of the 20th century, approximately one million residents of the country were Jews, or about 15% of the population of Belarus at that time. However, World War II almost completely erased the history of Jewish heritage in the country, despite the fact that the number of wooden and stone synagogues by that time was approaching two thousand. Wooden meeting houses were burned or turned into ruins by the Nazis, and the stone and brick structures that managed to partially survive were transferred to warehouses, cultural centers, cinemas and other organizations. Only a few of these monuments of synagogue architecture have been restored and are now operational. The book-catalogue of synagogues of Belarus indicates their addresses, photos, and also briefly describes the history and features of burial among Jews.
