The present book is not just a bright professional research of Stalingrad battle’s course. M.Jones focuses on the ordinary Red Army’s soldiers, trying to comprehend, what made them fight firmly under the extremely difficult conditions. Using the war archives to back up the dramatic evidences of the veterans, the author corrects the mistakes, which are common to descriptions of Stalingrad battle. He succeeded to show Stalingrad from the point of view of the participants of the battle and in this way to discover the inner essence of it. For that purpose the author concentrated on the 62nd army and described in details the battles in the city from the middle of September to the middle of November, 1942.
