The present book continues a series of collective monographs by the Europe Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the common name of “Old World – New Times”. A bit more than thirty years ago Spain left dictatorship in the past forever and started a transition to a new life in democracy. The transition period or “Spanish Transit”, as it is often called, lasted for a rather long time. The most striking changes took place after the Spanish Socialist Labour Party, led by Felipe Gonzales, had come to power in 1982. The present book is a result of an analytical research, dedicated to the most remarkable achievements, mistakes and actions by the SSLP and Popular party in the fields of economy and foreign policy, party building, social and cultural spheres of the country’s life in the last few decades.
