Soma Morgenstern's trilogy "Sparks in the Abyss" is dedicated to the rare theme of religious apostasy in German-Jewish literature. On the example of the Podil landowner family Mohylevsky from Dobropil, it is shown what an irreparable trauma the tragedy of the apostasy of one of its representatives, Yosyf Mohylevskyi, becomes for a pious Jewish family, and how difficult the process of conversion to the faith of ancestors and their Jewish roots is for his descendant, who was brought up in the bosom of Christianity. The first novel of the trilogy "Son of the Prodigal Son", the translation of which is offered to the Ukrainian reader, was published in Germany in 1935.
