Analysing the roots of geographical names and ethnic groups, the author discovers names of main unions and places of their location. Studying Russian and European surnames helped to find out that until XI-XIII cc. B.C. names of places and unions appeared in tribal names and names of kins and kin unions. Main principles of construction of tribal unions names and names of kin, which later became surnames, are found; new information about events of the Dorian invasion period is received.
