This is a collection of articles and researches on semiotics published by Department of Semiotics at the University of Tartu. The authors' interests are concentrated on the borderlines between semiotics and culture. They made an attempt to unify the title of the publication in all the languages that expresses the authors' wish to participate in the development of theoretical thought as well as to deal with concrete empirical analysis. All the articles are grouped under the following headings: general semiotics (M. Danesi), semiotics of culture (G. Sonesson, E. Tarasti, etc.), semiotics of language and literature (M. Lotman, J. Johansen, С. Vitt, M. Sheliakin, etc.), eco- and sociosemiotics (W. Noth, K. Kull, J. Bernard, etc.), book reviews.
