The monograph studies ‘posad’ as a specific type of small semi-urban settlement, for instance, that one, which formed outside the Laura of the Holy Trinity and St.Sergius and was declared a posad in 1782. Sergiev Posad serves as an example of the transformations, peculiar to the new settlements, and specific forms of town life. The influence of the greatest monastery upon all the spheres of life: the population structure, the orientation of trade, the staff of the administrating authorities is clarified as well.
