Vladimir Nabokov resisted reading his prose through the prism of sketches and drafts. However, the complex narrative structure of his works, their stylistic sophistication and ontological multidimensionality can sometimes be revealed to the reader only by comparing the primary plan and the final version of literary texts, be it a novel, short story or autobiographical narrative. The book is an experiment in archival interpretation of his writings from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s.
