The monograph is a series of interrelated essays on the Sarmatians and their ethnocultural context in the Volga-Ural region during the 4th to 7th centuries. The book examines culturally significant and sometimes sacred artifacts, including elements of dress, amulets, and symbolic markings found on various materials such as metal, ceramics, bone, and glass.
Modern digital tools allowed for precise mapping of artifact discovery sites. The book includes detailed tables of artifact categories with brief descriptions (date, cultural affiliation, source, coordinates). Archaeological material is analyzed in relation to written sources of the first millennium CE and topographic data to define the settlement area of the Sarmatian Ases and Burtases in the Volga-Ural region. The book is richly illustrated with original photographs of hundreds of artifacts from museums across Russia and Europe.
