The study of the phenomenon of Russian-Jewish literature is perhaps the main work of the life of an outstanding translator, philologist and literary critic Shimon (Simon) Markish (1931–2003). The son of the legendary Jewish poet Peretz Markish, who was shot in the fabricated case of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, went to his wife in Hungary in 1970 and from 1974 to 1996 taught Slavic studies at the University of Geneva. In 1983 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Russian-Jewish literature" in France. The publication includes more than 40 essays by Sh. Markish about the outstanding representatives of this literature: Rabinovich, Levande, Babel, Ehrenburg, Grossman, Jabotinsky, Shklovsky, etc. The book was prepared for publication at the insistence of historians and literary critics of Israel. The foreword was written by Leonid Katsis.
