This unbiased study identifies Russia's imperialistic drive to conquer the Dardanelles as the underlying cause of the two Balkan Wars (1912-1913). The Russian government's original plan to turn Bulgaria into a satellite state of Russia after the Balkan country's liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule in 1878 was foiled after the 1885 unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and the province of Eastern Rumelia and the 1908 proclamation of the independence of united Bulgaria. Therefore, the Russian Empire decided to push Bulgaria into a war with Turkey that could do away with Turkey's presence in the Balkans and could subsequently lead to Bulgaria's own demise at the hands of Russia. The book was banned during the communist era (1944-1990).
