The year 2015 marks 25 years since the Republic of Latvia was restores de facto to complement its continued de jure existence after occupation and annexation by the USSR in mind-1940. For more than 50 years, the Baltic peoples' right to self-determination was so successfully denied that their reappearance in the late 1980s demanding return of their stolen independence was surprising both to their well-wishers abroad and to the Soviet ruling elite. This book describes how step by step the people of Latvia restored the independent Republic of Latvia. Eschewing any call for violence limits were continually treated during this campaign as to what the Soviet leadership was prepared to tolerate as a political and legal process, without violent repression.
