In the Turkish War of Independence textbook for children published by Istanbul Hilmi Bookstore in 1929, Ahmet Refik addresses the child readers after telling about the processes before and after the declaration of the Republic: “Now you are the hunters of a free and glorious land. You are right to be proud of this. However, who else should you be thankful to for these great happinesses you have gained? Your fathers, your elder brothers, our brave and lion-hearted soldiers… Now, you also have things to do towards them: You will work for the rise of the Republic with all your heart and body. Know well that the Republic lives only with science, art and progresses with morality. From now on, every nation will always try to progress in science, art and morality, and will try to surpass each other. And you will not fall behind them. You will work and preserve the country that your fathers saved by shedding blood in the same way.”
