The Middle Ages were a thing of the past. The sixteenth century brought many changes to the life of the Czech kingdom. The first Habsburgs ascended the throne, and the new era brought self-confidence into the veins of society as a whole - the burghers, the nobility, the clergy and the subjects. Scribes across the country were busy recording human destinies and everyday stories. An important source for learning about life, everyday worries, crime and punishment in western Bohemia are the rarely preserved official books of the town of Rokycany. Over the centuries, they reopen and long-forgotten destinies speak from their dusty sides. The first of the three parts of the book Renaissance Pitaval from the Podbrdske region introduces readers to city justice, presents various types of prisons and tells stories of witchcraft, ritual murders, blasphemy, gambling, arson, disobedient subjects, theft and poaching. At the end of the book, there is a glossary of period terms used.
