The novel is based on the real life story of the author's grandparents. Maria and Jan got married and Jan promised his beloved wife that he would always take care of her and their little children. However, the incoming regime led by the Communist Party intervened in their fate, and Jan became one of the innocent victims that the new era demanded as a demonstration of its strength. Jan's punishment was not only dangerous and hard work in the uranium mines, but also the realization that his family was left without his help, without funds, hundreds of kilometers away. The meaning of his life was the daily struggle for survival in conditions reminiscent of concentration camps.
