The harsh, danger-filled life of the Don Cossacks forged them into bold and headstrong people, capable of both heroic feats and acts of defiance. This defiance often manifested in various forms of disobedience—from the religious schism and the migration of some Cossacks to the Kuma and Agrakhan rivers in the late 17th century, to open rebellions against state authority throughout the 18th century.
