Eleonore was a princess in the Principality of Reuss, one of the many German principalities of the 19th century, located in the region of Thuringia. She became famous internationally as a Samaritan who served as a nurse during the Russo-Japanese War and was decorated by the Russian emperor. Eleonore became the second wife of King Ferdinand of Bulgaria. During the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), she provided healing and comfort to hundreds of wounded Bulgarian soldiers and took care of orphans whose fathers had died in the wars. The press said about Eleonore: "The nation is her child." The patriarch of Bulgarian literature, Ivan Vazov, immortalized her in one of his poems. She is popularly known as "Bulgaria's crowned angel".
