Pushkinskaya (now Pushkin) was located next to Tolstoy Street. It was formed in the XIX century on the territory of the former Upper Castle. Originally called Theatrical - from the theater, which was in the area (in the courtyard of the modern building design bureau). Renamed the street in honor of the writer Alexander Pushkin in the early twentieth century, in connection with the 100th anniversary of his birth. This date was widely celebrated in Vitebsk. A few days in the theater, gymnasiums, other institutions were literary and musical evenings, readings and "solemn acts." On Yuryev Hill, staged mass celebrations. At the celebrations, the idea arose to open the Pushkin library in the city. In 1904 it was carried out on the donations of citizens. The most notable building on Pushkin was the male Alexander gymnasium (from 1921, the Pedagogical Institute; it existed until 1973). Despite the fact that the street was small, its section was occupied by tram tracks. In Soviet times, the name of the street was transformed from Pushkin to Pushkin. In 1939, the inhabitants of Vitebsk established a monument to the poet here, which stood until the 1960s. Exactly half a century later, in 1989, a second monument appeared here, which still stands today. Every year, beginning in 1993, on the birthday of Pushkin, a celebration of poetry takes place at this place.
