The book is the first very detailed guide to all Prague cemeteries. The publication contains about 80% of previously unpublished information obtained during fieldwork and on the basis of a thorough study of archival sources. The book has a simple and clear structure. The introductory part captures a broader cultural and historical perspective on the issue of death, funeral rites and people's relationship to death since the early Middle Ages. This is followed by chapters on the development and types of tombstones and the motifs and symbols that are integral to their decoration. These chapters are supplemented by a glossary of technical terms and tables containing a chronological overview of the most important dates. The most important part of the book is a catalogue describing the existing cemeteries of the whole of Greater Prague and a considerable number of long-defunct cemeteries that were located around all of Prague's churches. The 245 cemeteries (parish, municipal, evangelical and Jewish) have been treated in great detail. Each entry contains a detailed description and history of the site, a list of buried personalities and lists of literature, archaeological reports, archival sources, important illustrations and plans. The aforementioned descriptions of the cemeteries are made as clear as possible and in a way that makes them very easy to navigate and comfortable to browse. The book concludes with name and local indexes.
