Mati Sirkel (born 1949) graduated from the University of Tartu in 1972 as a Germanic philologist, then worked in literary theory and philology and as a freelance translator. From 1990, he was the foreign secretary of the Estonian Writers' Union, from 1995 to 2004 he was the chairman of the Estonian Writers' Union, then again a freelance translator. He has translated mainly from German, but also from English, Swedish, Dutch, Russian, Finnish, French and Modern Greek, and has also translated into German.
