Covering one of the most significant problems of Russian linguistics - polysemy and synonymy in the tense-aspect system of Russian verbs the author establishes types of semantic opposition of aspects in their principal meaning of the imperfective and the concrete-factual meaning of the perfective - depending on the semantic class of the respective verb. He also brings out the semantic components of the basic special meanings of the perfective and imperfective forms; and describes the conditions in which those components are realized.
