In the second half of the 20th century, language itself found itself in a state of communicative and political "captivity" in Eastern Europe. At least, that was how many artists and poets from the region felt, and they responded to this challenge perceptively, creatively, and with concern. They focused on the material and media aspects of language and created performative situations for themselves and their audiences in which it was possible to test, stage, and experience the radical possibilities of linguistic expression. Poetic performances also revealed the boundaries of language, including the question of what can and cannot be expressed through language. The connection between poetry and performance led to the emergence of specific communities that were shaped by the unique nature of the local environment and various circles and trends in unofficial culture. This lavishly illustrated publication symbolically reconstructs these communities and environments and allows for their mutual comparison.
