This literary research is devoted to creation of a theoretical model of a historical novel, description of its sustainable structural peculiarities and construction of typology of the present genre. At the same time the author takes into account different traditions that a historical novel has absorbed, and first of all these are traditions of a "gothic" novel. The edition observes historical novels written by Russian authors during the periods of the highest popularity of the genre (the third part of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth centuries). As apical phenomena can open artistic possibilities of the genre, main attention is paid to the most remarkable works of two epochs - "The Captain's Daughter" by A.Pushkin, "Taras Bulba" by N.Gogol, "A Fire Angel" by V.Bryusov. A Western European historical novel, in particular works by Walter Scott and Victor Hugo, are considered as well.
