Everyone knows the lines of the song "Estates are burning, the Germans are dying, the forest and the land will be ours", but a slightly different and more ambiguous version has also been written down by the people - "Estates are burning, Germans are dying, peasants are dancing in front of glasses".
On the one hand, of course, this directly describes the plundering - when the Saxon is sacked or knocked down, the victorious peasant takes his glasses from his nose and takes them to his barn as spoils of war. On the other hand, the glasses symbolize culture and education - in other words, the lines of the song make it clear that the peasants will be the heirs of the Saxons and the transmitters of their values.
And that's how it went. We have borrowed words and food recipes from the Germans, learned manners and polite behavior, read their books, imitated them in student life and household. We are Estonians, descendants of peasants, but we wear glasses made by Germans and look at the world through them, without really noticing it.
