Can trauma become a thing of the past with the end of war? Can it not affect the behavior, consciousness, and culture of society outside the front? The reader of this book will find the answers to these and many other questions. This is not only a study of the literary reception of the wars that are raging in post-communist Europe. This is an attempt to read the military language, which modern Ukrainian and foreign writers are so actively mastering.
"Beyond the Battle" is at the same time a testimony of the culture of the wound, which, having formed on the Balkan and Ukrainian battlefields, penetrated into much wider spaces of Western cultural discourses. We are talking about the new voices of young authors who, in these wars, persistently search for their own identity, form a national consciousness and carefully analyze the important, but at one time, suppressed or modified historical memories of their families and ethnic groups. The book reveals a modern literary vision of the Russian-Ukrainian war in Donbas: from the point of view of its participants, victims, volunteers, those who lose loved ones and relatives on the front roads. The artistic and verbal interpretation of the traumatic experience of Croatian, Bosnian, and Slovenian writers, who have already learned to talk about war from a certain time distance, appears as a retro and perspective on Ukrainian reality.
