Ostrovets is a city, the center of the Ostrovets district of the Grodno region of Belarus. Population - 10,878 people. It was first mentioned in written sources in 1468. In 1542, after the death of the last representative of the Gashtold family - Stanislav - Ostrovets passed into the possession of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund I the Old, and from him to his son Sigismund Augustus, who donated the estate to Jerome Karitsky in 1546. 1795 - The third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as a result of which Ostrovetchyna went to the Russian Empire and was divided between Vilna, Oshmyany and Zavileisky (Sventsyansky) districts of the Lithuanian province. 1921-1939 - Ostrovetchina as part of Poland, in the Oshmyany district of the Vilna voivodeship. 1940 - Ostrovetsky district was created as part of the Vileika region. 1958 - Ostrovets received the status of an urban village. 1960 - Ostrovets district becomes part of the Grodno region. 1962 - Ostrovets district is divided between Oshmyany and Smorgon districts. 2012 - Ostrovets was given city status.
