It is a collection of young men's stories from the time of their arrival for compulsory basic military service (CMS) to its completion after 24 months (or longer, depending on the situation in East-West relations). These are heart-warming but often tragic stories and, above all, the drudgery, especially during basic training, which lasted several weeks. The training included mainly tactical, marksmanship, chemical and political training (the so-called PSM - political training of men) in which hatred of the Western states and fear of the so-called saboteurs and saboteurs, who supposedly infiltrated our territory, recruited our citizens into their (intelligence) services, and even murdered - especially soldiers who guarded the Western borders or military ammunition depots, were instilled. This training and education took place according to the Soviet model - hard on the training ground, easy on the battlefield. It is therefore not surprising that soldiers were often sent from their barracks to their hometowns in special wagons of freight trains in tin coffins. This was also because not only the healthy, but also the more physically handicapped and mentally retarded young people were called up to the ZVS. On the other hand, many young men who had parents or relatives in senior positions in the party, state or military service were not called up to the ZVS (outwardly for health reasons). They were said to have so-called blue books, on the basis of which they were exempted from military service.
