The novel is about growing up a boy in one of the smaller provincial towns, the main character and first-person speaker recalled after a few decades how the "old man", music teacher at three different gymnasiums and composers, and above all a self-taught and extraordinary, unusual man with unusual pedagogical approaches within a few months he learned music thesis, playing on piano and singing, in short, "playing" to the extent that the previously lost boy without a future passed the exam at the Pedagogical Academy of Music and began studying music. More importantly, in the words of the first-person narrator, the old man prepared him to deal with life, indelibly marked him and supported him humanly at the points where the boy felt his "manko", and above all he opened it for the experience that it was right in moments the greatest doubt and impotence necessary insistence without asking for meaning, without reassuring to yourself and others.
