Toller’s memoirs are filled with ambivalent impressions of a country rising after the Civil War — a country undergoing unprecedented technological growth, the development of cities, universities, science, and the press. Particular attention is given to the changing role of women and children. Toller carefully conveys the circumstances of his meetings with political figures, leading writers of the 1920s, and people of the theater. Joseph Roth read Toller’s letters from the USSR while preparing for his own journey in 1927; hence the overlapping themes and, at times, similar narrative practices.
