Nikolay Leykin (1841-1906) takes the reader on a virtual trip along the Northern Dvina from Vologda to Archangelsk and the recently constructed Archangelsk-Vologda Railway. With the help of the book one may feel the atmosphere of the XIXth century in the Russian North, when steamship transport along the mighty Northern Dvina River flourished and it seemed that it had wonderful possibilities and when passengers of the Northern Railroad were afraid to travel by train. Interesting stories are accompanied with historical and contemporary photos.
