The publication includes materials of the conference "Germans and the Russian North" that was held in Arkhangelsk on October 25-28, 1998. This conference for the first time united historians, research officers of archives and museums as well as students of local lore and university students. The multilateral history of Russian Germans in the North has been highlighted in the four subsections of the conference: historical sources about Russian Germans; Russian North culture and the Germans; German settlements; repressions against the Germans.
