The history of literature and art of the Soviet era eloquently testifies to the amazing ability of the human spirit to extract benefit from even the most unfavorable circumstances. This applies primarily to the art of music. In a country where free speech was suppressed in every possible way and even the fine arts were subject to the strictest censorship, academic music found itself in a privileged position. Using the words of Andrei Platonov, music under a repressive regime is “finally banned literature, when it began to moo, and from this, from the final prohibition, independent great art emerged.” This book provides an overview of the music created by composers of the Soviet country, representing different generations and movements, over seven and a half decades of its existence. The three parts of the book deal, respectively, with the musical movements of the 1920s, the music of the Stalin period, and the development of musical art in the post-Stalin USSR. The text is provided with musical illustrations. The main text is accompanied by a chronograph of musical works and events in musical life.
