Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi (1865–1944) is rightly considered one of the most influential and at the same time the most complex figures in the history of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. For more than forty years on the metropolitan throne, he faced all the cataclysms that befell Europeans in the first half of the 20th century: world wars, the collapse of empires, the spread and domination of totalitarian ideologies, etc. And although he did not consider himself a politician, his pastoral service inevitably acquired a socio-political dimension and significance, and his attitude, in particular, to the Nazi regime and his activities during the years of the German occupation still receive diametrically opposed assessments and often become the subject of ideologically colored discussions.
