What makes up medieval travel narratives? What stylizations, masks and motifs do travel narrators use? Who read, copied, and edited manuscript surviving travel narratives and how? What place in the European context do these narratives created in the Czech lands have? The book describes the literary tools and motifs that shaped travel narratives, examines manuscript traditions, and traces the paths that manuscripts took to scribes' workshops and libraries. Rather than reading travelogues as a source of information about contemporary travel practice, it focuses on the meanings associated with the works themselves, their literary structures, and the material forms in which these texts have survived. The book departs from the earlier emphasis on travel narratives that originated in the space of medieval Bohemia and presents local works as part of a Europe-wide literature of Latin and translation.
