Jan Matejko is one of the most outstanding Polish painters, awarded and decorated many times; he was a member of many artistic societies, academies and scientific institutions. In 1878, he received from the community of Krakow, on behalf of the entire nation, a sceptre, a symbol of rule in the field of art. Both his enormous historiosophical visions and smaller illustrations of history aroused great interest, shaping the imagination and historical awareness of Poles. Matejko is the author of over 300 paintings and 3,000 drawings.
