The book explores and explains the historical events and processes that played a crucial role in the creation and development of the town of Lukavac, with a special focus on demographic and social conditions, as well as cultural and historical heritage.
The period explored in this book is very significant in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was the era of searching for the best way out of the crisis of the Ottoman Empire and trying to implement reforms in it, including the Bosnian eyalet as the most advanced province of the empire towards the west. The Ottoman administration in Bosnia conducted the first official population census in 1850 and was able to better assess the demographic and social characteristics of its subjects. When it comes to the area of Lukavac, in 1850, 1,481 houses and 5,324 male inhabitants were listed. Of these, 3,830 are Muslims and 1,494 are non-Muslims. All in all, taking into account possible estimates of the number of unenumerated female population, according to later indicators and demographic trends, the area of Lukavac was then inhabited by about 10,000 inhabitants.
